Summary

A lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster。

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission--and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish。

Except that right now, he doesn't know that。 He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it。

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time。 And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company。

His crew mates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him。 Alone on this tiny ship that's been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it's up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species。

And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance。

I read ‘Randomize’ by Andy Weir last year。 Did not know who Andy Weir was at the time。 I was kind of moving along through that short story series。 Had no idea that he was the same fella who wrote ‘The Martian’ either。 But I do now! Andy Weir is now on my radar and I’ll be watching!Honestly, this just might have become my favorite book。 It is beautifully written。 It is funny, it is suspenseful, and it is exciting。 I could hardly put it down。 I don’t really read books more than once。 But I will li I read ‘Randomize’ by Andy Weir last year。 Did not know who Andy Weir was at the time。 I was kind of moving along through that short story series。 Had no idea that he was the same fella who wrote ‘The Martian’ either。 But I do now! Hell YES, Andy Weir is back! Author of The Martian returns with his third book after a middling second book and all I can do is say Hail Mary! This book is great。 Our protagonist wakes up on a space ship on his way to save the world。 He can't remember much after being in a coma for several years of travel, unfortunately his fellow crew members did not survive。 Out there by himself, he is trying to find a solution to the problem of our sun being eaten。 In so many ways, the next sentences could be Hell YES, Andy Weir is back! Reminded me of Michael Crichton style。 VERY detailed in the science behind stuff。。。a bit more than my interest in space。 However I liked the personal storyline and it kept me interested until the end。

Loved it!!!!

It has some thematic similarity with earlier novel (Martian), of a smart engineer/scientist trying to survive alone in space through clever and quick technical problem solving。 However, beyond that this is a very different story。 It does not have the credibility of his earlier book, neither is it logically as bullet proof。 In spite of all its shortcomings, it is an absolute page turner。 A very enjoyable read。

Great book! If you don't want to read the book you can probably wait for the movie because I can imagine this one will be on the big screen someday。 Great book! holy shit that took forever。 thoroughly enjoyed it but i could never get more than a few pages under my belt except in extremely non-"late night in bed" scenarios。 loved it。 would rec to all sci-fi readers but won't need to because it'll surely be the most well known (and most sold? likely) in the genre this year。 holy shit that took forever。 thoroughly enjoyed it but i could never get more than a few pages under my belt except in extremely non-"late night in bed" scenarios。 loved it。 would rec to all sci-fi readers but won't need to because it'll surely be the most well known (and most sold? likely) in the genre this year。 。。。more

OMG。 What can I say about this book。 First off, Andy Weir had me at “The Martian”。 I absolutely LOVED that book, so after reading that I went and grabbed “Artemis” and was honestly, a little disappointed。 But when I first heard of his new project “Project Hail Mary” I was totally on board。 The story line was once more a one man survival mission and it was right back up in my “I can’t wait for this to come out” book list。 I preordered and received it on the day of release。 I was hooked from the f OMG。 What can I say about this book。 First off, Andy Weir had me at “The Martian”。 I absolutely LOVED that book, so after reading that I went and grabbed “Artemis” and was honestly, a little disappointed。 But when I first heard of his new project “Project Hail Mary” I was totally on board。 The story line was once more a one man survival mission and it was right back up in my “I can’t wait for this to come out” book list。 I preordered and received it on the day of release。 I was hooked from the first page。 What a ride! This book checks all the boxes of great science fiction。 A great “hero” if you can call him that。 Wonderful cast of characters that surround the hero and a journey with a high degree of risk that can only be survived if you use every brain cell you can muster。 Waking up alone on what appears to be a spaceship with not even the memory of his own name, let alone how he ended up in this predicament, it takes him days to start remembering who he is and where he came from。 This back story is told as memories as they start to return to this lone “astronaut”。 The story pulls you into his past and through his present with nail biting science that needs to be performed to overcome the plethora of road bumps in his journey。 How can he make it all alone on this journey to save planet Earth? Answer is…。 He can’t and he doesn’t。 I loved this book so much。 It has been a couple of days since I finished it and I can’t get it out of my mind。 Absolutely brilliant from this author。 Yet another book I don’t think he can beat, but I thought that same thing with “The Martian”, but here he outdid himself with “Project Hail Mary”。 A must read of 2021。 What will he come up with next??? I don’t care, I’m buying it! 。。。more

Completely engrossing。 I was so invested in the characters and what was going to happen。 The author has such a talent for explaining science and making these events seem plausible and humorous。 I loved it。

Wow。 I don’t often read sci fi, but this book was fantastic in so many ways。 Heartwarming and smart and funny - I couldn’t stop reading it!

OK, 4。5 stars。 This book is amazing。 What an incredible way to teach deductive Reasoning。 A little hard to follow at times, but I love the premise。

Fantastic book! A lot of research went into making the science plausible and it shows。 Some parts are incredibly exciting while others are endlessly intriguing。 I highly recommend it to anyone who liked his previous novels The Martian or Artemis。 This is one of the few books that I wish I could forget in order to experience reading it for the first time again。

I knew that Andy Weir wrote The Martian and *gasp* it's one book that I did not read but only saw the movie。 I liked the movie and hoped I would also like this book。 I was not disappointed!A fast paced book, heavy on math and physics but easy enough to follow。 You follow Ryland Grace as he awakens from a coma and how he ingeniously figures out that he is on a spaceship, why and where he is on a spaceship and how to (hopefully) save Earth。 I knew that Andy Weir wrote The Martian and *gasp* it's one book that I did not read but only saw the movie。 I liked the movie and hoped I would also like this book。 I was not disappointed!A fast paced book, heavy on math and physics but easy enough to follow。 You follow Ryland Grace as he awakens from a coma and how he ingeniously figures out that he is on a spaceship, why and where he is on a spaceship and how to (hopefully) save Earth。 。。。more

I love this book。 It started rather slowly, but the friendship between Grace and Rocky is one of my favorites in fiction in recent memory。 What a wonderful, optimistic story。 The Martian was wonderful, but this was more。

Erin Storey

I should have refreshed my chemistry and physics before reading this book as some of it went over my head。 Some parts just seemed a little too unbelievable so that is why I gave it 4 stars。 But overall I really enjoyed this heartwarming story of a new friendship brought together by the same mission。

So good!!!

I loved this book, I will read again! Bitter-sweet ending。 Love all the science and friendships that bond。 The writer really has a way with creating amazing one- liners。 And also Write what you know, Write what you love, that is defiantly Shown here。 <3 I hope this book also becomes a movie。

I have a hard time reading stories that are in the first person。 It is probably because when I do, I describe myself in the third person reading the book。 Usually, because of my terrible reading skills, I end up describing what I just read in the third person while reading the first person aloud, then I notice my wife silently judging me and I sympathetically give her a voice in the second person judging my third person narrative of my first person novel。 It gets confusing。 I like the five legge I have a hard time reading stories that are in the first person。 It is probably because when I do, I describe myself in the third person reading the book。 Usually, because of my terrible reading skills, I end up describing what I just read in the third person while reading the first person aloud, then I notice my wife silently judging me and I sympathetically give her a voice in the second person judging my third person narrative of my first person novel。 It gets confusing。 I like the five legged alien。 。。。more

LOVED。 (view spoiler)[This book is ten kinds of crazy and I couldn't put it down。 The plot goes in places I never expected, Rocky is an awesome bud, and the ending was perfect。 Enjoyed the concept of "sun algae" and the science behind everything。 The twist at the end -- that Ryland did NOT volunteer to go on this fucking mission -- was really well done。 Just yay! Earth is in trouble。 The sun’s light is fading from some mysterious extraterrestrial life, deemed astrophages。 The greatest minds come together and build a ship to send three people to a faraway galaxy in search of hope。 Ryland Grace is a science teacher turned astronaut who has no idea how he earned a spot on this mission。 Over the course of the novel, he remembers how he got here, finds other sentient life, and does a LOT of math and crazy cool microbiology experiments。 I love how this author Earth is in trouble。 The sun’s light is fading from some mysterious extraterrestrial life, deemed astrophages。 The greatest minds come together and build a ship to send three people to a faraway galaxy in search of hope。 Ryland Grace is a science teacher turned astronaut who has no idea how he earned a spot on this mission。 Over the course of the novel, he remembers how he got here, finds other sentient life, and does a LOT of math and crazy cool microbiology experiments。 I love how this author pairs humor with his crazy science fiction plots。 Our protagonist is SUCH a middle school science teacher。 It’s hilarious! Do I like sci-fi? I’ve never gravitated (ha?) much towards sci-fi novels, but this and the Martian may have me reaching for it more often。 The book is great with so many twists and turns。 The flashbacks allow us to learn things with the narrator as opposed to being frustrated by the things he doesn’t remember and the readers do。 Loved our protagonist and the relationship he forms。 You truly are rootIng for him through all the ups and downs and challenges。 Overall, if you loved the Martian, you’l Do I like sci-fi? A few minor spoilers -- hard not to since the book is told partially in flash backs。 Scientists discover a strange phenomenon: a line of infrared light that goes from the north pole of the sun to Venus。 Closer investigation shows that this is causing a gradual dimming of the sun: gradual, but one that will have a catastrophic effect within 30 years。 And most nearby stars are experiencing the same thing, with one exception: Tau Ceti has indications of the infrared, but is not experiencing dimming A few minor spoilers -- hard not to since the book is told partially in flash backs。 Scientists discover a strange phenomenon: a line of infrared light that goes from the north pole of the sun to Venus。 Closer investigation shows that this is causing a gradual dimming of the sun: gradual, but one that will have a catastrophic effect within 30 years。 And most nearby stars are experiencing the same thing, with one exception: Tau Ceti has indications of the infrared, but is not experiencing dimming。 Thus is launched the worldwide effort called Project Hail Mary, an effort to send a one-way mission to Tau Ceti to determine why it's not dimming and send the information back to Earth in hopes that it can be used to stop what is happening to the sun。 Ryland Grace, one-time astro-biologist and now junior high science teacher, is drafted to help in the effort, and becomes heavily involved when he is the one who determines that a microscopic organism is involved and works out its life cycle。 This, like Weir's The Martian, is very much a "science (and engineer) the shit out of it" adventure SF story (though Grace wouldn't phrase it that way)。 It's narrated by Grace, who awakens from an induced coma in the Hail Mary, around Tau Ceti, with parts of his memory missing, and it only comes back to him why he's there and what was done to get to that point a bit at a time。 Grace is a great character: he's smart and funny and real (and the kind of teacher that all of us wish we'd have had in junior high)。 This is also a very good, very well worked out, first contact story, as Grace discovers that humanity isn't the only race trying to solve this problem。 The alien that he encounters -- named Rocky by Grace due to the appearance of his skin -- is also a memorable, well drawn character。 In a cover blurb, George Martin says this is a book that Heinlein and Asimov would have loved。 I agree, though in many ways the writer that it most brings to mind is Hal Clement。 In Clement's books, the conflict was almost never "man vs。 man。" It was always "sapient species vs。 nature" -- humans and aliens working, often together, to solve tricky science and engineering problems。 Anyone who liked The Martian will also like this novel。 。。。more

Andy Weir is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors! I know a lot of people did not enjoy Artemis as much as The Martian, but this book is just as good as both of them。 I loved the main characters and there was very little not to love about this story。 I would have never thought I could care so much about a little alien rock spider。

Doug

Really torn on this one。 The second half of the book was pretty good, but I thought the first half read too much like a YA science lesson。
